Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition which is becoming more common worldwide. One of the most efficient ways of treating this disease is via diet modification. However, poor awareness of diabetes food management may limit optimum glycemic control. The research aims to assess the short-term effects of audiovisual health education on dietary knowledge in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This quantitative research used a pre-experimental design. The design that was used in this study was a one-group pretest-posttest design. There were 74 individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Pelambuan Community Health Center, Banjarmasin identified by unintentional sampling. The data were acquired by utilizing a previously validated, valid and reliable food knowledge questionnaire and analyzed by using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Most of the respondents (62; 83.78%) had inadequate nutritional knowledge with an average score of 35.32 before intervention. After the audiovisual health education, all the respondents (100%) had high knowledge of nutrition, with the mean score improving to 88.83. Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed statistically significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (p < 0.001). These results indicated that there was a short-term increase in dietary knowledge after audiovisual health education to type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at Pelambuan Community Health Center, Banjarmasin.
