Abstract

Every diabetes mellitus patient needs to receive minimal information that is given after the diagnosis is made, including basic knowledge about diabetes mellitus, self-monitoring, causes of high blood glucose levels, oral hypoglycemia drugs, meal planning, foot care, physical activity, arrangements when sick, and complications. In its implementation, the delivery of this information needs to be done in stages. It should be avoided too little or too much information in a short time. In conveying information, the factor that needs to be considered is the condition of the patient with diabetes mellitus, both physical condition in this case the severity of the disease and psychological condition. The goal of health education for diabetes mellitus patients is to increase their knowledge because knowledge is the starting point for changing their attitude and lifestyle. In the end, the goal of education is to change the behavior of diabetes mellitus patients and increase adherence which in turn improves quality of life, so that good cooperation is needed between health workers and diabetes mellitus patients and their families so that diabetes treatment can be successful (Basuki, 2005).
